Do you have a difficult time transitioning skills from a stable environment (range) to a dynamic environment (the golf course)? Unlike most sports, golfers spend much of their practice time in a blocked practice setting which is not preparing them for the challenges they face on course. So here is an alternative if you find yourself going through mindless repetition on the range.

1. Firstly, ask yourself, if you want to just hit some balls & maintain feel, work on long irons, fix a slice etc.? Be specific and clear about intentions. It matters.

2. Secondly, always have a target. It’s the only way to create valuable feedback. With this, the player can access all the self-organizing capabilities that allow change to naturally emerge. If you’re working on a draw, making the ball curve right/left is fine, but it must start right and finish at the target. This is the feedback for you to adjust and modify as you go.

3. Once the swing feels good, add some random practice. Try playing a virtual hole alternating clubs. Go through a full pre-shot routine and hit to a specific yardage etc.. This stops the player from becoming too comfortable.

4. Only once you feel ready, I would then add some variability. Try different lies, hit some punch shots. Play a 9-point game (1 point for each ball flight):

After the session ask yourself, what shot felt the most (un)comfortable? What did I learn? What did I do well & what will I do with what I learned?

We are trying to create mental engagement and develop skills which you can access more easily to the course. Remember, when you’re not getting it, you’re getting it! So, stay patient.
